Introduction to CALL
Carers Together has been providing an independent part time support, information and signposting service for carers since 1993. In response to consultation with carers in 2003, it became apparent there was a need for the service to be extended to cover longer hours every day during the week as well as evenings and weekends. Funding was sought and the Carers Active Listening Line was launched on 2 March 2005 to provide an independent non-judgemental listening ear for carers.
Reason for CALL
- Carers may be isolated due to their caring role and/or because they live in rural communities.
- This may be at any time during the week day or evening or at weekends and bank holidays.
- Carers may sometimes need to seek statutory service provision, advice or information, and are able to do this through health or social services, but very often they simply need to talk or communicate with another human being and are therefore reluctant to contact statutory services during normal working hours or out of normal working hours.
How does CALL work?
- CALL provides a listening ear at any time between 9am to 11pm, 7 days per week for 365 days per year and improves the quality of life for carers and the people for whom they care.
- It listens to carers, providing information or signposting to appropriate services when needed.
- It enables carers, of all ages, to offload their stress to someone available and understanding.
- It has access to a wide range of information about support available for carers and is able to signpost them to appropriate services. The information, together with appropriate training, development and support, assists carers to make choices about their caring responsibilities.
- It complements 'CLICK' an email support network for carers and also ‘Ring around Carers’.
- It works in partnership with other agencies e.g. Hampshire Mencap, Alzheimer’s Society SE Hampshire, Carers Forums, Age Concern Hampshire and Parkinson’ Disease Society and is able to offer them an independent service outside their normal hours.
- It has FREE phone number for carers to call when seeking support and information or to offload stresses and concerns to enable them to care.
CALL Outcomes
- CALL benefits informal carers, no matter what their age or for whom they care.
- It enables carers experiencing stress to offload their concerns, without prejudice, to a non-judgemental empathetic independent person, making their lives less stressful and enabling them to continue to care with support.
- Carers feel better informed and are often able to make a better informed choice as a result of offloading concerns and finding independent information and support.
